Social media has completely changed the landscape of interior design. Trends are moving faster than ever, leaving consumers and even interior designers outcasted from the cycle. For the first time ever, we’re seeing the rise of microtrends or fads in this industry, which could be potentially catastrophic for the durability and sustainability of current designs.
While we’re committed to the supremacy of personal style, we know some are wondering what’s shifting in this ever-confusing world. So, to help you find your feet, we’ve scoured the web for the most commonly asked interior design questions in 2023. Using our passion for interior design and decoration, and an unholy obsession with tracking trends (yes, we’re talking about you, 2022 Design Review), we think you’ll love this article. What is the interior design trend for 2023?
We don’t think there is one major trend that will take over, however, we do think that wellness-amplified spaces are bound to dominate this year. Think artisanal details, rustic elements, desaturated palettes, natural textures, plants, innovative materials… With more and more people investing their money on mental, spiritual and physical fitness, we think restoration and serenity will be major players in the interior design space this year.
Will grey still be on trend or fashionable in 2023?
We’re sorry monochrome grey lovers, but this colour is definitely on the outs this year. In 2023, we expect to see warm neutrals, chocolates and emeralds make a splash on the scene.
Are statement walls in style for 2023?
100% yes. While accent walls, meaning a differently painted wall in an otherwise monochrome room, are definitely a thing of the 2010s, we see interior designers taking bigger risks with their walls. Wallpapers, murals, interesting textures and arched accents will be all the craze this year.
What is the kitchen trend for 2023?
In 2023, we expect to see the continuation of the stone craze. In contrast to the 2022 sage kitchen, we envisage a darker, sultrier version with warmer tones. Visually, it will be the difference between a home cook vibe and a sommelier’s arena.
Is painted furniture still in style for 2023?
Yes and no. Sorry for the nuance! We know it’s not the sexiest response, but it’s true. More and more antique collectors are being vocal about the importance of preserving the essence and wood of secondhand and vintage pieces. However, if the piece is damaged and a coat of paint or stain is necessary, we’re totally for it! It’s an incredible sustainable option, and a testament to the creativity of designers and consumers.
What bathroom trends will be popular in 2023?
In line with the Wabi sabi aesthetic we’ve been hailing for a while now, we think bathrooms are in need for a do-under. Still serene and incredibly chic, plaster walls, rough stone and antique brass are on the comeback to create more relaxed spaces. Mediterranean vibes all year round we say!
What trends are out in 2023?
Truthfully, all elements can be done elegantly if it represents a designers’ and customers’ style truthfully. However, we do think that some things need to evolve as time goes by. Here is our ultimate list for goodbyes:
- Bouclé.
- Monochrome rooms.
- Shiplap.
- Destroying historical homes to create new ones.
- Excessively curved furniture.
