The pandemic helped many of us discover a whole new level of appreciation for our kitchens - it’s where we baked our banana breads, sipped that vino, and perhaps even set up our home office.
As we enter the new year we thought it would be nice to peer into the future and share the trends for 2022.
1. Earthy Tones
In times of chaos, we seek calmness and the kitchen is becoming our new safe haven. From soft beige joinery to pops of walnut and other timbers, we are seeing a real trend in calming and warm kitchens.
2. Exposed Range hoods
What was once always a concealed appliance has become a celebrated feature in the kitchen. We are now seeing designers not only expose rangehoods, but also use them as a sculptural feature in the kitchen.
3. Tiled Splashback
You may be surprised to hear that the tiled splashback isn’t going anywhere soon! Whilst the subway tile might be slightly overdone and outdated, other tiles are still very popular and vary from subtle to statement.
4. Timber Cabinetry
Nothing screams warmth and sophistication more than timber cabinetry. Whether it matches your floors or designed to contrast, this timeless material is always a favourite.
5. Pops of Brass
If you’re looking to make your kitchen more luxurious, a pop of brass will do the trick. It’s stood the test of time and is here to stay. Google has reported a 90% increase in searches for brass homeware and lighting this year, so there’s no surprise that this will be a leading material for 2022.
6. Organic Geometry
Curved islands made a debut last year and now we're seeing this trend extend even further. Scalloped edges and other irregular curved shapes are becoming more popular in kitchens and we predict this will grow to be even more popular in 2022. These forms can be applied to the island and cabinetry or perhaps the materiality like we see in this image with the scalloped marble edging.
7. Glass Cabinetry
2022 will also see the reintroduction of glass cabinetry in our kitchen. A timeless feature, which allows personality to peek through and display beautiful collectibles.
8. Hint of Green
The trend for using bold shades has been trembling for years but now we're expecting to see a real focus on green. Green kitchens are expected to grow even more in popularity in 2022, perhaps as it’s a colour we associate primarily with nature. This grounding shade has an incredible way of reconnecting us with our surroundings, creating moments of calm and positivity. It also seems that people are becoming more comfortable with bold colours.
In 2022, our kitchens will continue their hybrid role, as the centre of the home and entertainment as well as the office. From a design perspective, greens will lead in 2022, accented with brass hardware, glass cabinetry and curved geometry. We are excited to see these trends transpire.
